FOOD CANS – Steel for packaging: trusted experience
Direct access to information on steel packaging for the food sector…

APEAL - the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging - is a federation of four multi-national producers of steel for packaging in Europe, founded in 1986, representing some 92% of the total European production of steel for packaging.

Values like security, protection and preservation have been associated with steel for decades of tradition and effectiveness, while it is adapting itself to the changing world of evolving consumers and brands' needs, presenting outstanding new shaping, embossing, printing and sizing potential as will be demonstrated.

Five million tonnes of steel for packaging are produced each year by approximately 10,000 people in 8 countries. More than half this production is used in the food and drinks industries, but the applications of steel for packaging are vast, covering virtually the entire field of industrial and consumer products.

APEAL, Ball Packaging Europe and SKB (Stichting Kringloop Blik) commissioned a study with Prognos, a well known German/Swiss consultant in strategic & environmental consultancy. The study assessed the environmental and macro-economic impact of the mandatory deposit on one-way drinks packaging in Germany. Conclusions show that the mandatory deposit has not reached its objectives. On the contrary it has led to an acceleration in the reduction in market share of refillable drinks packaging, with only a marginal impact in terms of environmental benefits.
