The European Commission has proposed a package of actions aimed at improving the environmental performance of products and stimulating the demand for more sustainable goods and production technologies. EU industry will be encouraged to take up new opportunities and innovate in order to ensure its continued leadership in environmental performance. The action plan also explores means to promote sustainable production and consumption internationally.
The steel industry focuses on a life cycle approach as the key to delivering true sustainability. Life cycle Assessment, LCA, is a tool that enables us to measure the holistic environmental performance of a product at each stage in its lifecycle, providing a measure which can be used to compare the environmental sustainability of similar products. Life cycle analysis shows that throughout the years, the steel industry has been using fewer natural resources per tonne of steel produced, with a final positive impact on the environment. The steel for packaging industry will continue to further optimise its eco‐efficiency by increasing the energy efficiency of the production of steel. The industry remains strongly committed to the reduction of CO2 emissions by further promotion of the recycling of steel for packaging.
