The steel for packaging industry is continuously developing innovative solutions to meet consumers' needs.
Packaging materials are increasingly required to adapt to busier lifestyles, smaller household units, a lack of time for preparing food, as well as eating and drinking while on the move. Convenience foods, such as ready meals or conveniently packaged or quick‐to‐cook ingredients, play a key role in today’s modern and often time‐pressured society. To respond to this major requirement, steel packaging now provides a wide range of opening systems, and reclosability when needed, in a wide range of sizes and volumes.

FACT: Steel packaging is microwave‐friendly
Recent research by the Fraunhofer‐Institut für Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung (Fraunhofer IVV) has found that under normal conditions of use, shallow and wide open steel containers are safe to be used in microwave ovens and that they provide a superior uniformity of heating when compared to food heated in plastic containers.
A few basic guidelines, such as fully removing the lid of the container, placing only one filled container at a time in the centre of the glass turntable and leaving a gap between metal container and oven wall, are specified.
For the consumer, this offers an added convenience of being able to heat food in steel packaging with both microwave and traditional ovens.
