STEEL FOR PACKAGING ACHIEVES A NEW RECORD IN EUROPE WITH A 72% RECYCLING RATE IN 2009
APEAL (the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging) releases the latest figures that demonstrate how recycling rates of steel packaging for Europe in 2009 increased by 2% to reach more than 72%.

Recycling rate of 69% confirms steel for packaging’s continued position as leader in Europe.
Latest recycling statistics represent a further 3.5% reduction of steel for packaging’s CO2 emissions year on year and place the recycling rate for steel above those of other packaging materials such as plastic, beverage cartons and glass (19.7%, 32% and 62% respectively). - 30 May 2008

New study reveals objectives of mandatory deposits in Germany not reached
APEAL, Ball Packaging Europe and SKB (Stichting Kringloop Blik) commissioned a study with Prognos, a well known German/Swiss consultant in strategic & environmental consultancy. The study assessed the environmental and macro-economic impact of the mandatory deposit on one-way drinks packaging in Germany. Conclusions show that the mandatory deposit has not reached its objectives. On the contrary it has led to an acceleration in the reduction in market share of refillable drinks

Metal packaging is microwave-friendly
Under normal conditions of use, shallow and wide open steel and aluminium containers are safe to be used in microwave ovens. This is the outcome of an independent study of the Fraunhofer-Institut für Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung (Fraunhofer IVV). Researchers also found that food in metal containers is more uniformly heated than in plastic containers - 16 March 2005
