Carbon Footprint

CO2 and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with a product, using LCA methodology.A Carbon footprint is the overall amount, expressed in terms of CO2 equivalents, of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with a product, using LCA methodology.

APEAL is currently:

  • Contributing to the future ISO 14067 Product Carbon Footprint series of standards
  • Participating in the CEN report on LCA & Packaging
  • Co‐operating with our customers to develop carbon footprint calculators for steel packaging applications
  • Monitoring and providing expertise on national carbon footprint methodologies (AFNORADEME, Belgium, UK PAS 2050)
  • Through our members, participating in the ULCOS Project

ULCOS PROJECT

ULCOS stands for Ultra–Low Carbon dioxide(CO2) Steelmaking. It is a consortium of 48 European companies and organisations from 15 European countries that have launched a cooperative research & development initiative to enable drastic reduction in Carbon dioxide(CO2) emissions from steel production. The consortium consists of all major EU steel companies (including Corus, ArcelorMittal & Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe), of energy and engineering partners, research institutes and universities and is supported by the European commission. The aim of the ULCOS programme is to reduce the Carbon dioxide(CO2) emissions of today’s best routes by at least 50 percent.

Both the ULCOS Consortium core members and the European Commission have decided to further move forward during the last meeting of the European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP) and to launch ULCOS II to take over that work as soon as ULCOS I is completed in 2010. ULCOS II is planned to run from 2010 to 2015. The results of ULCOS II can potentially be rolled out into production plants some 15 to 20 years from now.
