Dallmayr : "We Opt for Steel to Pack Our Premium Brands

According to recent statistics, an average German citizen consumes 4 cups of coffee per day, which results in a yearly per capita consumption of 160 litres. This makes coffee the favourite drink in Germany, even above beer !

One of the most renowned coffee suppliers in the German market is Dallmayr, based in Munich, with a history dating back to 1700. The company has supplied exquisite "Delikatessen" to connaisseurs throughout the centuries and has a reputation for the finest quality. In the domain of delicacies, coffee has always played an important role and Dallmayr has constantly pursued its policy to offer the highest standards of quality in the coffee market. As a result, Dallmayr is rated amongst the top brands in Germany. For many decades, Dallmayr has been loyal to steel cans for the packaging of ground coffee. Mr. Dieter E. Vogel, Head of Green Coffee Division and Roast & Ground Production, has been witness to this and is one of the architects of Dallmayr's success. "For household consumption we had a market share of around 10 % in 2000. And in East Germany we have an even higher market share - there we are the number 2 brand".

Preserving aromas and flavours

Dallmayr has always been a pioneer for the use of steel cans for coffee. Mr. Vogel stressed, "In the late 1950's we were already vacuuming our coffee cans to preserve aromas and flavours. I can recall when our cans still had a key opening device similar to those you still see today on corned beef cans." He continued, "We adopted the so-called "Zieh Fix" system and as early as 1970 Dallmayr switched completely to easy open ends." With the development of coffee percolators and other coffee making systems the market for coffee expanded rapidly and Dallmayr developed with the market. Mr. Vogel stressed, "Cans remain the most suitable container for high quality coffee. We therefore kept steel cans for our premium brands because of their excellent presentation properties and airtightness".
