"Existing Packaging" Category: The Millennium Can
In the "Existing Packaging" category, DM 30,000 was awarded by the panel of experts to the quirky Millennium Can designed by the Bitburger Brauerei Th. Simon GmbH. This beverage can demonstrated that the printing technique on steel for packaging is clearly superior to many other packaging materials. The photo-realistic printing format made quite an impression on the jury due to the high quality of reproduction as well as the clear colour style. Harald May, head of the marketing department, commented : "Waterless Printing" provides a reproduction quality for photographic models, which could not previously be achieved. Due to the excellent and individual decorative quality, this beverage can could be introduced as a convenience item in the event sphere." Here, too, there are huge benefits to be exploited using steel for packaging: the packaging design can be styled according to individual requirements, enabling the trademark industry to react to new trends flexibly and rapidly.

"New Packaging Concepts" : "Get One!"
The canned Gherkin Snack
The company Spreewaldkonserve Golßen GmbH scooped the prize in the "New Packaging Concepts" category. The packaging solution "Get One!" proved that completely new market segments can be developed using a regular three-piece steel can. Konrad Linkenheil, manager of the Spreewaldkonserve Golßen GmbH, declares: "It was our advertising agency, MO&O in Dusseldorf, who came up with the idea of packing our Spreewälder Gherkins in a steel can in order to give the product a progressive image. The innovative trendy design and packaging style make for a fun product which should attract new groups of buyers. The exceptional packaging gives the product a young cult character".

The "Young Talent" Award: Up-market shirts, packed in steel

Up-market shirts
packed in steel,
winner of the
"Young Talent" award |
 |
The "Young Talent" category, with prize money of DM 10,000 was won by Yvonne Rumpf, undergraduate of "communication design" at the Technical University of Trier."It struck me that shirts for men are awkwardly and unattractively packed. The polyethylene sheet, the cardboard collar and many needles make it more difficult to unpack and repack," the prize-winner said. As an upbeat suggestion, the undergraduate created an elegant form of steel for packaging with a practical window for shirts. The exclusive, stackable packaging improves POS design, distinguishing the product from competitors, as the steel box clearly stands out from conventional plastic packaging. Furthermore, the packaging is convenient, practical and beautifully designed and can be easily stacked in a wardrobe to prevent the shirts from being creased - even when travelling.
